Deep Sky

Deep sky objects are those fuzzy things in the eyepiece (even when it is focused). Deep sky objects include things like clusters of stars, nebula, galaxies, and other amazing things out there.

These objects appear fuzzy when viewed through most telescopes under most conditions. Larger telescopes in a very dark clear sky will reveal some more details. The human eye also cannot pick up the colors since they are too dim. That is where photography comes into play. With long exposure photographs and high gain digital cameras you can reveal the deep colors and details.
Over the years we've tried to capture images of deep sky objects. Starting with Tri-X film (ASA 400, black and white) on through high speed color slides and then into digital cameras designed specifically for the task we've learned a lot along the way.
Exposure information for these photographs includes film speed, exposure duration, and the telescope/optics used.
