Description: Eclipse tracks in the style of the San people's rock paintings are shown over the walls and tower of the Great Zimbabwe. The tower is flanked by two trees. Above the right tree are the stars of the Southern Cross constellation. There are two tracks above and below the eclipse phases. These symbolize the two eclipses of 2001 and 2002 that took place north and south of the walls themselves respectively.
The Great Zimbabwe is a very large stone ruin located in central Zimbabwe. It is from this impressive structure that the country derives its name. Zimbabwe translates to English as "House of Stone". The Great Zimbabwe ruin shows evidence of being inhabited as late as the 1400's. There is archeological evidence showing that trade with the Persians took place from the same location nestled in the large rocky hills. The walls of the Great Zimbabwe stand over 30' tall and we constructed by piling cut rocks.
A gray color with subtle browns and tans of the serpentine stone give this sculpture an almost ancient look. It combines a simple primitive look with the simplistic abstract commonly found in Shona work. A very special piece with almost mystic qualities.
