Description: In a scene reminding me of the Arthur C. Clark classic 2001 - A Space Odyssey, this dark black sculpture shows two baboons in the Matopos Hills watching the total solar eclipse. The eclipse of 2002 did fall across the southern parts of the Matopos Hills, a place considered to be sacred and full of magic by the local people.
The baboons seem to be comprehending or appreciating the eclipse, enjoying its view in the same way most people do. The eclipse is represented in the San cave painting style along with the path of the Lozi in the stars (the Milky Way). The path of stars is considered the path way of the Lozi people who followed it to find refuge north of the Zambezi river in what is now Zambia. There were no constellations amongst the stars even though many of the stars had names for identification purposes.
This is a haunting sculpture since the baboons have very human characteristics in the way they are watching the eclipse. It is as though they understand something wonderful is going on and can appreciate the beauty of it. A very dark color with a pleasing blend of the ancient and the new.
