Description: A white faced owl took to the air as the sun was darkened. Awoken from his rest early, he lazily circled the quickly darkening sky in hopes of finding a snack. Animals and birds often react to the eclipse in this manner thinking that night is about to fall or has fallen. All around the sky appears as if in sunset or sunrise.
The white owl is combined with eclipse phases in the style of the ancient San cave painters of Zimbabwe. The owl looks sleepy as it has just been awoken during the day time hours by the darkening sun. Normally a night time hunter the owl took flight just before totality to seeks its prey not knowing that the night was to be very short. The owl is considered to have a sacred and wise hunting spirit.
Eclipse chasers can attest to seeing birds take flight before and after the eclipse just as they would at sunset. This sculpture combines the African ancient with the spirit of the eclipse chaser or hunter.
