Solar Eclipse Time Cartoons

- by Bill Kramer

Time is very relative when it comes to eclipse chasing. These cartoons focus on timing.

Relativity during an eclipse: In the early 1900s eclipses were used to try and observe the effect of gravity on light. That is not the type of relativity this cartoon depicts. Instead it explains how time passes relative to the eclipse phase and the eclipse chaser. Note that C1 to C2 is a very long time, C2 to C3 a very short time, and C3 to C4 rarely observed.

Too Quick: All eclipse chasers know that no matter how long an eclipse is supposed to last, it seems like just 15 seconds. The view is amazing and there is a lot to take in. If you are used to casual astronomical observing, this is a very different experience.

Really bad timing: In addition to making sure your equipment is ready and all batteries charged, it is not a bad idea of take care of other business well before totality hits.

All eclipse cartoons were created by Bill Kramer using an iPad and the ArtRage drawing program.
